Designer Anuj Sharma of Button Masala

An alumni of National Institute of Design, Anuj Sharma is one of India’s premier fashion designers and has shown his collections on runways in India, Japan, UK, Sweden and Bangladesh.

Working mainly in areas of craft development and sustainability, Sharma’s focus is teaching and understanding human behaviour with the help of fashion. Button Masala is Anuj’s unique method of constructing clothes without any machine, tools or stitches, and has been exhibited and taught internationally to over 35000 people across the world. He shows students how to turn a piece of fabric using a simple joinery system consisting of buttons ( or sequins, bottle caps, coins) and rubber bands.

His vision for the label Button Masala is far-sighted and environment-friendly. “It’s simple, it can change the way we are, the same dress can be worn differently. Just by re-arranging the buttons and bands we can make thousand variations of the same garment and reuse and reuse again. In another 30 years I hope Button Masala can reduce waste and clothes disposal in ways that I can’t even imagine now.”
